El término VJ fue popularizado a principios y mediados de los años 80 por la cadena de televisión MTV. Unos años antes, a finales de los años 70, el término fue introducido por la tripulación de la sala de estar de menta, un club de baile popular en Nueva York. Los artistas querían distanciarse de los artistas de vídeo congestión que formaban parte de la escena cultural Ártánd en Nueva York. MTV co-fundador de Bob Pittman se apropió del término de sus presentadores de MTV. (I) Para el día de hoy el término VJ es todavía un nombre en disputa.
Según neerlandés VJ Micha Klein «La diferencia entre un VJ en la televisión y un VJ en un club es la misma que la diferencia entre una radio y un club-DJ». Según VJs muchos, un VJ es nuevo, mucho más que un club del ejército yugoslavo. Para estas personas, el aspecto más importante de VJ es la conexión en directo entre los sonidos y las imágenes, ya sea en un club, teatro, sala de exposiciones o en pequeñas reuniones. Pero ante todo VJ’s se han visto y considerado como un seguidor del house y techno. Y la estética son en su mayoría en comparación con los de los clips de vídeo que recibe difundido por diferentes canales de música en la televisión.

The term VJ was popularised in the beginning and mid-‘80s by television broadcaster MTV. A few years before, the end of the 70s, the term was introduced by the crew of the Peppermint Lounge, a popular dance club in New York. The performers wanted to distance themselves from the stuffy video artists that were part of the artand cultural scene in New York. MTV co-founder Bob Pittman appropriated the term for his MTV presenters.(i) To this day the term VJ is still a disputed name.
According to Dutch VJ Micha Klein “The difference between a VJ on TV and a VJ in a club is the same as the difference between a radio- and a club-DJ”. According to many VJs, a VJ is again much more than just a club VJ. For these people the most important aspect of VJ-ing is the live connection between the sounds and images, be it in a club, theatre, exhibition hall or in small gatherings. But foremost VJ’s are often seen and regarded as a follower of the House and Techno scene. And the aesthetics are mostly compared with those of video clips that get broadcasted by different music channels on television.
